Dragonriders of Pern
Anne McCaffrey Reviewed by Ozz/Dracahz Brief Content: Brief? BRIEF? How am I ever going to do this... Counting over 20 books and still expanding, this famous series revolves around the events taking place on the planet Pern over the course of hundreds of years. Having left the future planet Earth and all its wretched technology behind, a group of colonists sets out to find a new, more simple life on Pern, a planet that, at first, seems no less then a paradise, especially when children discover a most charming alien animal that looks a LOT like a miniature dragon. However, just when life begins to settle down, this paradise turns into hell as a small planetoid passes the larger planet and millions of deadly spores fall from the sky, consuming everything organic. Having left most of their technology behind, the humans turn to dragonettes, who have the ability to fight these spores, this Thread. Using all their biological knowledge, geneticists enlarge the little creatures to true Dragons, large enough to carry humans in flight and work as a team, endowed with telepathic abilities and the power to breathe fire... thus, the Dragonriders are born! The series then continues to describe the sufferings and joys of the colonists over the coming centuries, how the Dragons grow to be a part of their lives, how foolish people nearly bring destruction over them all, how hero's are born, and eventually, how they rediscover their past. Readers' Opinion: My goodness, I could write entire papers about this series... it is bigger then life itself, a phenomenon in the world of Dragon fantasy literature. If you havent read this yet... you are missing out on a LOT. The series is quite extensive, but each book ends sooner then you'd want it to. And if you are not a science fiction fan, then don't shy away; while the first book deals with the arrival of the colonists on the planet, the rest of the series reverts back to a roughly medieval society, which is how I like it best ;) Now, go read, I guarantee that within a few hours you'll be wishing you could take a trip to Pern yourself.
